Saturday August 25

Moonee Valley (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 4 No. 7 Shiny Buttons

  • Finished strongly last start when second to Dayita, implying that he’ll get the longer distance.
  • Has four wins and 10 placings from 18 overall starts, with that record improving to four wins and eight placings from just 14 starts when second-up or further into a preparation.
  • Has finished first or second in his last seven consecutive races.
  • Gets in on the 54-kilo limit and drawn well to get a cheap run in barrier two.

Race 6 No. 13 Royal Bender

  • She is a 1000-metre specialist, with four wins and two placings from eight starts at the trip (compared to one win and six placings from 18 starts at all other distances).
  • Her last three runs have been excellent – an easy win over 1000 metres at Sandown Hillside, a second at Listed level to Griffon at Eagle Farm and a narrow second to Platelet (bless her) over 1100 metres in the Listed John Monash Stakes at Caulfield.
  • Her overall Moonee Valley stats are poor, but she was placed in her only 1000-metre run at this track.
  • With the early speed likely to be strong, she’ll get her chance to run on late.

Race 8 No. 11 Livigno

  • Resumed with a nice third to African Pulse (one of the favourites for the Carlyon Stakes) at Flemington over 1000 metres, taking his record to two wins and a third from just four career starts.
  • His only previous run over 1200 metres resulted in a strong win over Cross Of Gold at Sandown.
  • From barrier three and with only 54 kilos, he should be at or near the front in a  race deviod of much obvious speed.

Warwick Farm (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 4 No. 12 New Beginning

  • She was a strong last start winner at this track in a BM85 race, thus a BM80 such as this race presents no issues class-wise.
  • Her overall record stands at five wins from nine starts, but if you subtract runs on heavy tracks you are left with four wins (and one race where she bombed the start completely) from just five races.
  • She won up to 1600 metres last campaign, so the 1300-metre journey here is well within her range.
  • From barrier three she should get a cosy run and be charging home late.

Eagle Farm (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 6 No. 3 Whateverwhenever

  • Her first-up effort was sound when running second on a heavy track at the Sunshine Coast.
  • She has strong second-up credentials, with two wins and a third from three previous attempts.
  • Her Doomben record is good: two wins and four placings from eight starts, including a win and three placings from four starts at the track/ distance.
  • Ran second at this track/ distance last preparation in a Listed level race, so the drop back to a Class-6 suits.
  • Drawn barrier one.

Making The Nut is very pleased to have Luxbet on board as a sponsor of the site again in 2012.

Luxbet offer a wide variety of bet types when it comes to thoroughbred racing. In particular, for something as simple as a win-only bet on any given race, there are a number of different odds options that can be taken. For reasons I’ve previously articulated in some detail, their ‘Best of Best’ odds option is my personal favourite. You can certainly do a lot better than the SP when you’re betting with Luxbet.
