Rules (as per January 29  introductory column)

(1) A ‘track rating range’ for which the tip will be considered valid will accompany selections.

(2) Results refer to a win-only bet at the bookmakers’ starting price (SP) or Luxbet’s ‘Best of Best’ (BOB) price divided into two groups– those where the SP is $5.50 or less (which are NOT recommended bets), and those where the SP is $6 or greater (which constitute recommended bets).

Saturday December 10

Flemington (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 7 No. 3 At The Heads

I like him resuming in restricted grade here after finishing unplaced behind subsequent Group-level winners Woorim and Testa My Patience in his two runs early in the spring. Prior to that, his form in these RB89 races (when carrying more weight than he will this time) was pretty solid. He has two wins and a second from six starts at the trip and with blinkers on for the first time should race handy to the pace, which will be an advantage in a race where the tempo is likely to be moderate.

Rosehill (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 8 No. 7 Leichtenstein

The narrowest of runners-up when resuming at Canterbury a fortnight ago, he looks well placed to go one better this time around. Don’t let his record at the 1200 metres (zero wins but seven placings from nine starts) dissuade you – among those placings was a second three starts back to the very promising Scarf on rain-affected going. He has a win and two seconds from only three second-up runs and from the inside barrier and with only 53 kilos after the claim, he should have every chance in running.

Doomben (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 7 No. 8 Excellantes

Nine runners from the Listed Keith Noud Handicap a fortnight ago return for this race and I think Excelleantes (beaten in a photo by Listen Son – bless his cotton socks) can go one better in this race. He meets Listen Son 1.5 kilos better for that run, gets a better barrier (number six, as opposed to 11 last start) and importantly can handle the sting out of the ground. Of those he didn’t beat last start he also has wins over Startsmeup and Adebisi. His track (two wins and two seconds from four runs) and distance (three wins and four placings from eight runs) records are excellent, and he can either sit on the speed if it is moderate or take the nice trail if it is more genuine. He simply ticks all the right boxes.

Morphettville (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 4 No. 5 Tabulated

A mare that seems to have found her niche around the mile mark, she is gunning for four wins on end after a win at Gawler was followed up by two at Morphettville Parks. The latest two wins saw her defeat two of her opponents here (Ocsmepop and Fast Frank), while the form line through Conduction sees her well placed against top weight Generous Beau. Importantly she can roll forward, a very handy asset in a race where she and Fast Frank appear to be the only likely leaders. Mares tend to hold their form once they find it, and I see no reason to jump off at this point.

Just a reminder that Making The Nut is very pleased to have had Luxbet recently come on board as a sponsor of the site.

Luxbet is offering a free $100 bet (literally a bet to nothing) if you sign up to their website either via the banner below or text links above. Just sign up and win (or not lose, as the case may be) on your free bet! Such patronage will alsohelp this site to grow in stature over time.

Luxbet offer a wide variety of bet types when it comes to thoroughbred racing. In particular, for something as simple as a win-only bet on any given race, there are a number of different odds options that can be taken. For reasons I’ve previously articulated in some detail, their ‘Best of Best’ odds option is my personal favourite. You can certainly do a lot better than the SP when you’re betting with Luxbet.
