Saturday January 7

Caulfield (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 6 No. 10 Josimar

In July last year he had his only two runs over the 1400 metres at Caulfield – the first one resulted in a win (with Cellarmaster 2nd and Ben Zena 4th), while a fortnight later he ran second to Massoni (Cellarmaster finishing 9th). He meets those 2 gallopers reasonably at the weights this time around. Don’t be put off by mediocre looking efforts so far this prep – over his career he has only 2 placings from 8 runs first or second up, but 3 wins and 4 placings from 11 runs later in his campaigns. Drops 4 kilos in weight from his second up effort as well, which can only aid his chances.

Race 7 No. 7 Miss Matari

Granted, she has only won a single race from 18 starts, a stat that would normally put me off very quickly. Nonetheless, her last two efforts at this track and distance (where she has a win and 3 placings from 6 starts overall) have been very sound and she gets a lovely weight drop here to 52.5 kilos after the claim. From barrier 6 she can roll forward in a race with uncertain speed and take some catching.

Warwick Farm (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 5 No. 10 Bag Of Nickels

She looks a progressive staying mare in the making, with 2 wins and 2 second placings from just 5 career starts to date. Last preparation she jumped straight from a 1400-metre Maiden win to an 1800-metre BM 70 race (while still a 3YO) and ran a very respectable second to Titbit. Now a 4YO mare, she kicked off her summer campaign with a strong win over 1500 metres in a BM70 race, so the step up to 1600 metres and BM75 company should be very manageable by comparison. Trainer David Vandyke can find a good one in his small stable (such as Group winner Lamasery) and this mare could prove one to follow.

Morphettville (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 5 No. 3 Montjeu Madame

A genuine staying mare who finally gets out to her preferred trip (2 wins and a placing from just 4 starts) at her fifth start this preparation. She meets likely favourite Ocsmepop 1.5 kilos better at the weights for trailing his by less than a length on Boxing Day (when hampered for clear running in the straight) and the increase in trip is likely to benefit her more than it does him.

Making The Nut is very pleased to have Luxbet on board as a sponsor of the site again in 2012.

Luxbet is offering a free $100 bet (literally a bet to nothing) if you sign up to their website either via the banner below or text links above. Just sign up and win (or not lose, as the case may be) on your free bet! Such patronage will alsohelp this site to grow in stature over time.

Luxbet offer a wide variety of bet types when it comes to thoroughbred racing. In particular, for something as simple as a win-only bet on any given race, there are a number of different odds options that can be taken. For reasons I’ve previously articulated in some detail, their ‘Best of Best’ odds option is my personal favourite. You can certainly do a lot better than the SP when you’re betting with Luxbet.
