June 11 Racing Selections

As Brisbane race caller Wayne Wilson would say “Happy Stradbroke Day!” With the Stradbroke Handicap, Brisbane Cup and Queensland Derby on the agenda at Eagle Farm, it promises to be a cracking day of racing. Tips for this weekend cover the June 11 meetings at Flemington, Randwick and the feature meeting of the day at Eagle Farm.

Saturday June 4

Flemington (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 4 No. 4 Big Spirit

For a 1000-metre scamper this race seems to be lacking in genuine early speedsters, and thus I will go with the ‘on-pace’ racing mare. She has an overall record of nine wins and ten placings from 29 starts, but this improves substantially to six wins and six placings from only 14 starts when looking at her 1000-metre record alone. She also has a win and a second from three tries and the track and trip and when first-up last preparation ran a strong second behind Grand Duels.

Race 8 No. 7 Titus Vinius

Arrived at this tip more by process of elimination than anything else, but his record once first and second-up runs are subtracted (three wins and six placings from 12 races) warrants respect. His last two runs were promising – third to Sophrosyne at Sandown Lakeside and then second to Shadowfax (who would starts odds-on here) at Caulfield. With Damien Oliver on board and gate three, he should get a nice smother in the run and be steaming home late.

Randwick (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 4 No. 2 Montana Flyer

She arrives in this race off a seven-week freshen after racing in the top flight over the Sydney autumn, where she picked up a win the Group 3 Millie Fox (defeating Graceful Anna) and raced twice in Group 1 company and twice in Group 2 company. I’m always partial to horses dropping back slightly in grade and feel like she can jump, lead and win.

Race 8 No. 4 Title

After carrying 58 kgs or more at each of his last three starts, this promising galloper finally gets into a race with a lighter weight (55.5 kgs)! He has a win from his only previous start at Randwick and after subtracting his first-up runs, has an overall record of five wins and four seconds from just 11 races. If he can get across into a handy position from his wide barrier, I expect him to regain top form with a win here.

Eagle Farm (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 2 No. 4 Beethog

Mares tend to hold their form once they have found it. Her last three runs have been excellent – third to Funtantes in the Listed Juanmo Handicap, winning the Listed Silk Stocking and running fifth (beaten only 0.6 lengths) behind Gundy Son in the Listed Chief De Beers Stakes. From barrier six and with only 53.5 kgs on her back, she should be able to race very handy to the speed (if not set it) and be fighting out the finish.

Race 3 No. 11 Willy Jimmy

A specialist miler (four wins and three seconds from eight runs at the journey), his race record is an impressive six wins and four placings from just 14 runs once first and second-up runs have been subtracted. His last three runs over the trip have resulted in a second to Launay at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, a win in the Goulburn Cup and a second to the promising Dysphonia in the Scone Cup last start. With the tempo of the race likely to be strong, he should be running on hard in the latter stages.

Race 7 No. 4 Love Conquers All

He has been knocking on the Group 1 victory door for a while now. Beaten a lip by Rangirangdoo in the George Ryder, he then ran second to Sacred Choice in the Doncaster Handicap before a five-week freshen and a last start narrow second to Beaded (whom he meets 1.5 kgs better at the weights this time) in the Doomben 10,000. The wide barrier may be awkward but if he can get across into a good spot in running, I think it’s his time to finally post a Group 1 victory.
