June 23 Golf Tips

Filed in Other by on June 22, 2011

With Rory McIlroy’s scintillating (not to mention record breaking) US Open display now one for the record books and the memory bank, the USPGA Tour rolls on to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship.

To recap, similar principles to those which apply for “Sting’s racing selections” will be in place here – bets will only be recommended for a top-5 finish in the tournament of that week where the price offered is $6 or better, with odds offered by Centrebet being used in the analysis.

Results for June 16 selections

Matt Kuchar(US Open): T-14.

Year to date selection results: 19 selections (excluding refunds), one winning collect, return of $6.00, Profit on Turnover (POT) = -68%

The Travelers Championship

The TPC River Highlands hosts the Travelers Championship, which has been played in the week immediately after the U.S. Open since 2007. At only 6,841 yards (or just over 6,250 metres) in length, it is the third-shortest course on the PGA TOUR schedule.

This shorter than typical length has translated into good scoring – the last 17 winners of the tournament have finished at 10-under par or better. The overall scoring average has been below 69.5 (or more than half a stroke under par) in each of the last three instalments of this event. Even the much-vaunted run of holes 15, 16 and 17 (known as ‘The Golden Triangle’) averaged marginally under par for the tournament last year.

With these things in mind, for the first time in around a month the focus should turn to aggressive players who can post plenty of birdies. Enter my old pal Bubba Watson.

Granted, Bubba has not been in fantastic form of late, making the cut but finishing well down the leader board at each of his past four starts since winning in New Orleans. However, the recent schedule of events has demanded a set of characteristics (e.g. finding fairways, playing steady golf, grinding out pars) that aren’t exactly in his wheelhouse. This week he returns as defending champion, having also posted a T-14 result in 2009 and a T-6 result in 2008.

His statistical by-line reads well for this event too – he leads the tour in percentage of greens in regulation, ranks second in driving distance (leaving him short approaches to many holes on this attackable course) and 11th in birdie average. He has two wins and three top-5 finishes already in 2011, and at $6.00 with Centrebet to finish in the top-5 again this week, I think he represents value.
