Melbourne Cup Market Wrap Up

Punters with any kind of stake in the 2013 Melbourne Cup know that it's smart to follow the odds from early on. Even though we're still a couple of months out from the big race, there have been quite a few fluctuations of late that have certainly rocked the boat.

Take Mount Athos, for example. The L M Cumani-trained gelding was sitting pretty at third favourite to take out the Cup, but recently made a jump from $13 to $23 odds. This is likely due to his lacklustre performance in the Group II Goodwood Cup at the start of August that saw him place eight from 14, although Cumani says he's still very confident in Mount Athos' Melbourne Cup abilities.

The award for the biggest fluctuation in odds in recent times has to go to Brigantin though, who recently went from reasonable $26 to unseasonable $41 odds. This could be due to the fact that the stallion is yet to really prove his worth on the Australian horseracing track, but with possible runs in the upcoming Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate in October he's got plenty of opportunity to show off his skills and improve those odds.

Not all fluctuations are bad though; firm Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune is still slowly edging those odds down. He recently went from around $7 to $5.50, a pretty big move at this time of the season. The stallion recently came off a big win at the P B Lawrence Stakes, and looks all clear to keep impressively moving forward right up until Cup day in November.
