Saturday January 19

Flemington (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to good 3 only)

Race 6 No. 12 Snow Cover

  • Once again, the trick with him is the need for a genuinely dry track – he now has six wins and five placings from 16 starts on tracks rated good, compared to no wins and two placings from 10 starts on tracks rated dead or worse.
  • While he has never run the 1702-metre journey before, his last start win was over 1600 metres and he has previously won over 1650 metres.
  • His stats at Flemington (one win and one placing from eight starts) are distorted by races on rain-affected ground, so don’t be worried by that.
  • He gets in with just 51 kilos (three kilos under the limit) after the claim.

Rosehill (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 7 No. 3 Secessio

  • His last start was excellent, when running a close third to Travolta. Given that it was only his second run of the campaign (and indeed, his second run in Australia), he was jumping from 1350 metres to 1900 and he had to carry 59 kilos, it was a very strong run.
  • He now drops to 57.5 kilos third-up and only has to rise 100 metres further in distance.
  • His last preparation in Germany (four races in total) included a win at his only previous start over 2000 metres, as well as a win and two second placings over 2200 metres.

Eagle Farm (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 3 No. 5 Master Avatar

  • He won four consecutive races before having to be snared back in the field from a wide barrier in the Magic Millions Stayers Cup last week and never really threatening.
  • In a smaller field this time and from barrier three this time, he should return to racing handy to the leaders.
  • His four previous wins this preparation include one over 2030 metres at Doomben (carrying 57.5 kilos) and another over 1826 metres at Eagle Farm (carrying 59), so a 54-kilo impost should see him able to run 2128 metres right out.

Making The Nut is very pleased to have Luxbet on board as a sponsor of the site again in 2013.

Luxbet offer a wide variety of bet types when it comes to thoroughbred racing. In particular, for something as simple as a win-only bet on any given race, there are a number of different odds options that can be taken. For reasons I’ve previously articulated in some detail, their ‘Best of Best’ odds option is my personal favourite. You can certainly do a lot better than the SP when you’re betting with Luxbet.
