This week’s selections cover the May 18 meetings at Flemington, Scone and Doomben featuring the Group 1 Doomben Cup). Since last week’s abbreviated spiels led to a pair of nicely-priced winners, I’m going to stick with that format until a run of losers is struck.

Tips where the SP was in the $10+ range (0.5 unit bets)

May 11:  no selections

2013:  44 selections, 37.5 units bet, 11 winners (1 dead heat), 9 placings, SP return of 74.50 units (99% PoT), BOB return of 83.50 units (123% PoT)

Saturday May 18

Flemington (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 7 No. 13 Johannapine

  • Only 2 career unplaced runs, 1 of which was in a Group 1 (beaten less than 4 lengths), 6 starts for 3-2-0 when first or second-up, narrowly beaten by Serene Star when giving her 4.5 kilos last prep (what price would Serene Star be here with 49.5 kilos?)

Scone (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 5 No. 3 Riva De Lago

  • Has been in excellent form since joining Chris Waller stable, last 4 starts have resulted in 2 wins and 2 placings at Group level, won this race last year at his only previous attempt at the track/ trip, drawn to get the gun run.

Race 6 No. 12 Plucky Belle

  • Her fourth placing in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes is outstanding form for this, 6 starts at the trip for 2-1-1, far better horse after a couple of runs back (7 starts for 1-1-0 when first or second-up, 6 starts for 2-0-2 thereafter).

Doomben (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 8 No. 11 Belltone

  • Did really well to get within 1.8 lengths of Famous Seamus given his poor first-up record (10 starts for 1-0-3) and a wide draw at the Gold Coast, has 18 starts for 7-4-2 when second-up or later, has 6 starts over Doomben 1350m trip for 3-0-1, drawn much better this time around.
