Remembering the Best

Filed in Other by on February 16, 2011

In Australian Rules football, club best and fairest awards mean plenty. The nights are an event, the results eagerly anticipated and the awards historical. Winners of each club’s best and fairest stretch back decades and are seen as a measurement of a player’s greatness.

Sadly, in rugby league, we tend to forget. History is rarely treated with the same reverence it is in other sports and club award winners are hardly even remembered. Most clubs make no mention of previous award winners on their websites. When contacted, those who work the front office simply can’t be bothered finding out. It is like these names never mattered, that these awards count for nothing.

No longer. Making The Nut is on a mission to recognise the champions of rugby league. Thanks to the great rugby league statistician and historian David Middleton- a man who should be recognised as one of the most treasured figures in modern rugby league- we have club best and fairest winners for all 16 teams. Older clubs are incomplete. Defunct clubs aren’t represented. Some clubs simply wouldn’t provide the winners.

We have a start though. Let it not be forgotten that Making The Nut does its utmost for rugby league history.
