Will Mount Athos’ Melbourne Cup Odds Improve?

Filed in Other by on September 2, 2013

Fans of Mount Athos had a little bit of their souls die at the start of August, when the previously third favourite contender for the 2013 Melbourne Cup slipped down the ranks with a dismal display at the Goodwood Stakes. The gelding had looked strong going into the race, but only managed to scrape in at eight out of 14 horses.

However, Mount Athos seemed to earn back some ground in respect from punters in his most recent performance in the Listed March Stakes last Saturday, when he narrowly yielded first position to Harris Tweed.

The big question now is will this be enough to improve Mount Athos' contention for a spot in the Cup in November? Trainer L M Cumani will certainly be hoping so, particularly with all his chances of winning his debut Melbourne Cup riding on the young gelding's shoulders.
