2013 ANZ Championship – Round 10 Tips

Filed in Other by on May 25, 2013

The best match in Round 10 of the ANZ Championship is saved for last, with the third-placed Vixens hosting the fourth-placed Steel in Melbourne. Ben Carbonaro split his two bets last week at one apiece to extend his season record to 12-6 – he returns to preview a big week in the context of the race for fourth position on the ladder in particular.

Our 2011 introductory discussion of how netball line betting works and what to expect from this column

Once again this year, for the purposes of this weekly column, we will only recommend a bet where Ben’s opinion differs from that of bookmakers by at least 3.5 goals.

Here are Ben’s thoughts on Round 10 of the 2013 ANZ Championships:

Round 10 Tips (please note: all times are the local time for the home side)

Sunday May 26, 12:10 PM NSW Swifts v Northern Mystics

Swifts:  1-7 (ninth on ladder), 1-2 home

Mystics:  1-8 (tenth on ladder), 0-4 away

Bookmakers’ line:  TBC

Ben says:  This game shapes as a mini final, with both sides are desperate to  avoid the wooden spoon. Both the Swifts and Mystics have won a single game this season, with neither side not really able to get their season going. The Swifts pushed Adelaide Thunderbirds last week and will be looking to do the same against the Mystics and crack it for win in front of their loyal fans. Swifts by 7
Recommended bet:   TBC

Sunday May 26, 2:20 PM Queensland Firebirds v Waikato/BOP Magic

Firebirds:  7-1 (second on ladder), 2-1 home

Magic:  4-4 (fifth on ladder), 1-4 away

Bookmakers’ line:  TBC

Ben says:  Queensland performed brilliantly as a team as they rallied together after a difficult week to knock off the Melbourne Vixens. The Magic lost to Southern Steel in what was something of an upset, but Irene Dyk had another perfect game as she didn't miss at goal shooter for the Magic. The Firebirds have won four of the last five clashes between these two teams and along with a very well drilled team all over the court counts for them. Firebirds by 9

Recommended bet:   TBC

Sunday May 26, 7:20 PM Central Pulse v West Coast Fever

Pulse:  4-5 (seventh on ladder), 4-1 home

Fever:  4-5 (sixth on ladder), 1-3 away

Bookmakers’ line:  TBC

Ben says:  The Pulse are on track to play finals netball for the first time on their history and it's a just reward for coach Robyn Broughton, who been at the forefront of shaking the cellar dweller tag. A dominant 15-goal win over the Northern Mystics where Australian shooter Caitlin Thwaites fired with 43 goals and combined well with her goal attack Donna Wilkins. Captain Katrina Grant has been a beacon in defence coupled with strong leadership. Fever broke their poor record on the road with a strong win over the Canterbury Tactix but will just go down against the Pulse.   Pulse by 5

Recommended bet:   TBC

Monday May 27, 7:40 PM Canterbury Tactix v Adelaide Thunderbirds

Tactix:  2-6 (eighth on ladder), 1-4 home

Thunderbirds:  8-1 (first on ladder), 3-1 away

Bookmakers’ line:  TBC

Ben says:  The Thunderbirds have becoming comeback queens with a number of one or two goal thrilling wins in recent weeks. They left their run late  against a competitive NSW Swifts team in what was a battle of the defensive ends early. They will easily account for a Tactix team that have been competitive and shown a bit this season, but will be outclassed by a Thunderbirds team that doesn't lack star power.  Thunderbirds by 20

Recommended bet:   TBC

Monday May 20, 7:40 PM Melbourne Vixens v Southern Steel

Vixens:  6-2 (third on ladder), 3-1 home

Steel:  5-3 (fourth on ladder), 2-2 away

Bookmakers’ line:  TBC

Ben says:  Melbourne were flat from start to finish against the Queensland Firebirds in what was a very emotional week following the death of captain and defender Laura Geitz's father Ross.  Steel are a team that are pushing to stay in the top four and play finals netball this year, with Jamaican shooting machine Jhaniele Fowler along with a developing but solid defensive line they certainly can't be discounted.  Vixens by 4

Recommended bet:   TBC

Bye week:  Nil
