Here are the selections for this Saturday:

Saturday April 23

Caulfield (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 6 No. 11 Kutchinsky

His last start fourth (beaten only 0.6 lengths) by Syreon at Group 3 level in Sydney put the writing on the wall – Syreon then franking the form line by running fourth in the Doncaster. In the Winter of 2010 he ran second to Dariana in the Queensland Derby, so the 2000 metre trip should pose no problem and a wet track only enhances his prospects.

Race 7 No. 6 Set For Fame

A classy mare who should be forgiven for her last start flop behind More Joyou – go back one start further and she stormed home late when finishing third behind Orbit Express over 1400 metres at Flemington. With a rain-affected track and a strong tempo both likely, she will be well suited and can be expected to be charging home late.

Randwick (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 3 No. 3 Hidden Wonder

She loves the Randwick mile, with two wins, two placings and an Epsom Handicap fourth placing from just six starts at the track and journey. Her last start second in the Doncaster Prelude against the boys suggested that she's back in top form, and returning to mares grade this time around can only aid her cause.

Race 6 No. 9 Macedonian

He stays like a mother in law – a winner over 2800 metres on Melbourne Cup day last year, a winner over 3200 metres in the Sandown Cup (defeating Mourayan and Above Average) and a brave third in the Adelaide Cup over 3200 metres when three and four wide without cover for much of the journey. He'll be fighting out the finish.

Race 7 No. 1 Rangirangdoo

Let's keep this simple. Ten wins and nine placings from 21 starts. A proven Group 1 WFA peformer, with wins in the George Ryder Stakes and second placings in a Ranvet and a Chipping Norton. The winner of the 2010 Doncaster Handicap. What isn't to like?

Race 8 No. 2 Kenny's World

He resumed with a fifth placing at Group 2 WFA level behind Hay List and in his previous campaign won at both Group 3 and Listed level, as well as recording a second at Group 3 level behind Drumbeats. He also has a win and a second from two starts over 1200 metres at Randwick and two wins and three placings from five starts when second-up.

Eagle Farm (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 4 No. 1 Border Rebel

Unusccessful in his trip to Sydney earlier in the year, he is well placed against a weaker field in Brisbane before the Winter carnival really gets cracking. While the 60 kgs impost is substantial, he does have twelve victories to his name from just 20 starts, including five from nine over the 1200 metres and one from one at Eagle Farm over the trip.

Oakbank (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 8 No. 1 Arinos

He is clearly the class animal of the field, as the weights scale for this race makes abundantly clear. He resumes today (having won three of his previous seven first-up efforts) and in the spring was competitive in far superior races to this, finishing less than a length behind Reward For Effort at Listed level and just over five lengths off Hay List atz Group 3 level. He should be too good for the competition this time around.
