Saturday February 2

Caulfield (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 5 No. 7 White Universe

  • He drew terribly (barrier 15) last start and had to be snagged to the back of the field last start before running on strongly to be beaten by less than three lengths. This time around, he has barrier three.
  • His form typically improves as he gets further into a campaign – he has a win and three placings from seven runs when first or second-up, but three wins and two placings from seven runs thereafter.
  • His only previous run over 2000 metres was at Flemington in September 2011, where he finished third behind December Draw and Green Moon. December Draw subsequently won the 2011 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes and started 2011 Caulfield Cup favourite. Green Moon ran second in that Caulfield Cup, won the 2012 Turnbull Stakes and then the Melbourne Cup. A pretty handy form line for a Listed race in February!

Race 6 No. 11 The New Boy

  • He has been knocking on the door of the winners’ circle, with three recent second placings, all involving being run down very late in the race.
  • He meets his nemesis of two starts back (Snow Cover) significantly better at the weights.
  • From barrier five and with Newitt staying on board, he can once again take up the running and give them plenty to chase in the home straight.

Rosehill (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 8 No. 11 I’m Cool

  • His run ended 50 metres from home on Magic Millions Day at the Gold Coast last start, so the drop in distance from 1200 to 1100 metres should suit.
  • His overall record of four wins and a second from six starts is excellent, and he won his only previous start over this distance.
  • From barrier five he should have no trouble in being able to press forward and race handy to the speed, which is his preferred style.
  • While he meets some classy three-year-old runners here (Better Than Ready, Ichihara and Raceway), he gets with a lighter weight than the two colts and only has to give the filly half a kilo.

Morphettville (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 6 No. 4 My Ex Mate

  • His three runs this time in look poor on paper, but are consistent with his usual trend – he has one win and three placings from 10 runs when first or second-up, but seven wins and a placing from 14 starts thereafter.
  • Last start he carried 58 kilos over 1550 metres and ran on solidly from the back of the field. This time, he drops to 54.5 kilos and out to a more suitable trip of 1800 metres.
  • He has three wins from seven starts at the track, including a win at his only previous run over 1800 metres. As a winner over 2500 metres last preparation, he is finally out to a suitable distance and could surprise at generous odds.

Making The Nut is very pleased to have Luxbet on board as a sponsor of the site again in 2013.

Luxbet offer a wide variety of bet types when it comes to thoroughbred racing. In particular, for something as simple as a win-only bet on any given race, there are a number of different odds options that can be taken. For reasons I’ve previously articulated in some detail, their ‘Best of Best’ odds option is my personal favourite. You can certainly do a lot better than the SP when you’re betting with Luxbet.
