Here are the selections for this Saturday:

Saturday April 9

Caulfield (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 6 No. 13 Returntosender

A last start winner at the track and trip, she was beaten less than three lengths at the start previous over this distance by Coolmore Classic winner Aloha when having to concede one kilo in weight, and stays on the 53 kgs limit for this race. She has three wins and two placings from eight starts over the 1400-metre trip and if she can gain a run (she is currently the first emergency), can race handy and be prominent in the finish yet again.

Race 8 No. 14 I’m Imposing

This lightly raced import ran sixth (beaten less than three lengths) by Whobegotyou in the Blamey Stakes, an excellent form reference for a race such as this. At his previous campaign, he won first-up at Caulfield over 2000 metres when carrying 59 kgs and subsequently ran fourth when second-up over 2800 metres. I think the 1800-metre journey for his second-up run this preparation is far more suitable and with only 53.5 kgs on his back, he will take a power of beating.

Randwick (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 3 No. 3 Once Were Wild

At her last start, she was rising in distance from 1600 metres to 2400 metres whilst carrying 58.5 kgs from barrier 13. Amazingly, she was the $4.00 favourite for that race – far less surprising was that the task was too much for her and she missed the placings. I think she is far better suited in this event and if she can repeat the quality of effort that saw her run second to Maluckyday in the Group 3 Lexus Quality on VRC Derby Day last year, she can win this race.

Race 4 No. 10 Hidden Wonder

A mare who usually takes a couple of runs to reach peak fitness, she goes into this race third-up after a respectable run in the Coolmore Classic behind Aloha at her last start. From five starts over the Randwick mile, she has recorded two wins, a third and a fourth in the Epsom Handicap behind Captain Sonador. A repeat of her Epsom run would see her in the winners’ stall tomorrow.

Race 8 No. 1 Graceful Anna

Forget her last start flop in the Coolmore Classic – all that it established is that she doesn’t run a strong 1500 metres. Her three previous starts were all second placings behind More Joyous, Montana Flyer and Triple Elegance respectively – a list that includes the favourite and second favourite for the Doncaster Handicap, so the form lines are outstanding. She is also far better suited over the 1200-metre journey this time around, having posted two wins and a second from three starts over the distance. With a lack of genuine front-runners in the race, I expect her to roll forward and be too strong in the finish.

Morphetville Parks (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 7 No. 8 Budriguez

The blinkers come back off after he over-raced when sixth (beaten 1.9 lengths) in the CS Hayes at Listed level last start. He is unbeaten over four starts at the track, two starts at the distance and one start at the track/ distance. Sometimes you shouldn’t over-think these things.
