Saturday August 13

Caulfield (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 2 No. 5 Diggersanddealers

Essentially if you like Carnero in this race (the second favourite, who has strong form through the favourite Testascana), then really you should also like the chances of this eight-year old gelding. Coming off a break of almost ten months, his first up run six weeks was an excellent third behind Mr Make Believe (in a race where Carnero ran fourth, hence the point above) and then two weeks ago he won at Caulfield he won over 1800 metres. Given that around this time last year he ran second to Moudre at Listed level over 1700 metres at Caulfield, I think he’s very generously treated with just 52.5 kilos after the claim and represents a huge threat to the two favourites.

Race 5 No. 16 Utah Saints

He resumes off a strong autumn campaign where he was very competitive against the likes of Dusty Star, Stirling Grove and Tunritup and perhaps more importantly with one of the biggest ‘gear changes’ a male horse can receive (being gelded). He handles wet or dry conditions, is drawn nicely in barrier five, has a win and a second from three starts over the 1200-metre journey and the same record from three first-up starts. His ability to race handy looks a big positive in a race devoid of obvious speed and I think he can cause something of a boilover here.

Race 7 No. 12 Simply Put

I do have an affinity with this mare after she supplied the inaugural week of this tips column with a good priced winner. Nonetheless, her record against the favourite Mid Summer Music reads as follows: (1) an unlucky second to her on Boxing Day 2010 when receiving a three kilo weight advantage; (2) defeated her at Sandown on 29 January (bless her) when receiving a one kilo advantage; (3) beat her home when both were beaten by Beaded at Group 3 level on February 12 carrying the same weight. Granted, Mid Summer Music has race fitness and a better barrier on her side, but Simply Put has a 2-1 lead in their head to head battles and at the much better quote, I will go her way.

Race 8 No. 2 Platinum Passion

Yes, the 57 kilos and barrier 12 first up are slightly awkward, but at the end of the day her record in the autumn is too difficult for me to ignore. While not recorded any wins last preparation, she was only narrowly beaten in both the Group 3 Schweppervesence and the Group 2 Sunline Stakes before having no luck in the Group 2 Queen of the South and running second to talented mare Vivid Vixen at Listed level. She has strong first-up form as well, with a win, a nose second and a fourth from three such outings. At the end of the day, I think her significant class edge will prevail.

Rosehill (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 6 No. 5 Soul

This horse really impressed me in his first ever preparation last spring and I think he can go on with the job this spring as well. He recorded two wins (including a win over Buffering) and three placings (behind the likes of Toorak Toff and Set For Fame) from his first five starts before an unlucky sixth placing down the Flemington straight behind Star Witness in the Group 1 Coolmore on VRC Derby day last year. With Gold Trail and Zaratone likely to set a hot tempo, I think he can rattle home late and prove too good.

Luxbet is offering a free $100 bet (literally a bet to nothing) if you sign up to their website either via the banner below or text links above. Just sign up and win (or not lose, as the case may be) on your free bet! Such patronage will alsohelp this site to grow in stature over time.

Luxbet offer a wide variety of bet types when it comes to thoroughbred racing. In particular, for something as simple as a win-only bet on any given race, there are a number of different odds options that can be taken. For reasons I've previously articulated in some detail, their ‘Best of Best’ odds option is my personal favourite. You can certainly do a lot better than the SP when you’re betting with Luxbet.
