Friday January 27

Moonee Valley (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 5 No. 2 Centexpress

She really does look nicely in with only 53.5 kilos for this race. A last start winner at Sandown Hillside, she has 3 wins and 5 placings from 9 runs over 955 to 1000 metres at the Valley, including a win over Miss Octopussy, a most unlucky 3rdto Rapidement and a 2ndto Obsidian Dragon this preparation. With Ravenous Lass and Over Exposed likely to lead them up, she could get the gun run just behind them and take some holding out.

Saturday January 28

Sandown Lakeside (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 5 No. 7 Cross Street

At his first ever go at the mile 3 weeks back, he ran 3rdto Agrippa and meets that galloper 5.5 kilos better off for being beaten only 2.2 lengths. Yet Agrippa is battling for favouritism while this galloper is almost the outsider of the field – go figure. His 2 previous starts at the track have yielded a pair of 2ndplacings. Importantly, the top 5 horses in this race all have to carry 59.5 kilos or more – a solid impost against a 54-kilo limit – and thus I’m looking further down in the weights for the winner here.

Race 8 No. 11 Rorke’s Drift

Another one I like from a ‘down in the weights’ perspective. His 5 runs this preparation have resulted in 2 wins and 3 placings, while he also has a win and 2 placings from 4 runs over the trip. With 51 kilos (3 kilos below the limit) after the claim and barrier 3 he is well in, while his natural pace over shorter distances may see him roll forward here in a race where the tempo is unclear.

Canterbury (tips based on a track rating range of dead 4 to slow 7)

Race 8 No. 3 Bereft

He signalled a return to form last start with a strong late burst to grab second behind Key West at Rosehill and now third up from a spell should go on with the job. He ran second at his only previous start over the distance and has excellent form on rain-affected going – 9 starts for 4 wins and as many placings.

Making The Nut is very pleased to have Luxbet on board as a sponsor of the site again in 2012.

Luxbet is offering a free $100 bet (literally a bet to nothing) if you sign up to their website either via the banner below or text links above. Just sign up and win (or not lose, as the case may be) on your free bet! Such patronage will also help this site to grow in stature over time.

Luxbet offer a wide variety of bet types when it comes to thoroughbred racing. In particular, for something as simple as a win-only bet on any given race, there are a number of different odds options that can be taken. For reasons I’ve previously articulated in some detail, their ‘Best of Best’ odds option is my personal favourite. You can certainly do a lot better than the SP when you’re betting with Luxbet.
