Friday January 25

Canterbury (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 5 No. 3 Unanimously

  • He has won three of his previous five first-up runs. Last time he resumed with a ninth placing, but that was on a heavy track, and he doesn’t handle wet ground well.
  • On tracks rated as good, he has three wins and three seconds from eight starts.
  • He has two wins and a third from his three previous starts at Canterbury, all of which were also over this distance, including a win in this race last year.
  • From barrier and with only half a kilo over the limit, there should be no excuses in running.

Saturday January 26

Caulfield (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to good 3 only)

Race 7 No. 5 Vatican

  • This horse needs a dry track – plain and simple. He has three wins and four placings from seven starts on good tracks, compared to one win and six placings from 16 starts on tracks rated dead or worse.
  • His last three starts over this trip on good tracks have resulted in the two-race winning streak he carries into this race and an unlucky second to Halle Rocks at Moonee Valley.
  • He drops 1.5 kilos from his last start victory and he has a win and a placing from four attempts at the track/ distance.

Race 8 No. 8 Now And Zen

  • His form this campaign has been excellent, with three wins and two placings from six starts.
  • Last time out he was held up badly when finishing 1.5 lengths behind Whisper Downs at this track/ distance, and he meets that galloper two kilos better off this time around.
  • Removing his two unplaced first-up efforts leaves a career record of four wins and three placings from eight starts, while he has three wins and two placings from five starts on good tracks.
  • With only 54 kilos (the limit weight), he looks well placed.

Sunshine Coast (tips based on a track rating range of good 2 to dead 5)

Race 6 No. 2 Lucky Luna

  • His two runs so far this campaign look unflattering, but they were both over unsuitably short trips and were also consistent with his normal fresh pattern.
  • He has two wins and four placings from 20 starts when first or second-up, but 10 wins and 13 placings from 36 starts when third-up or further into a campaign.
  • He has an excellent Sunshine Coast record, with four wins and a placing from seven starts, including three wins and a placing from six starts at the track/ distance.

Making The Nut is very pleased to have Luxbet on board as a sponsor of the site again in 2013.

Luxbet offer a wide variety of bet types when it comes to thoroughbred racing. In particular, for something as simple as a win-only bet on any given race, there are a number of different odds options that can be taken. For reasons I’ve previously articulated in some detail, their ‘Best of Best’ odds option is my personal favourite. You can certainly do a lot better than the SP when you’re betting with Luxbet.
