This week’s edition of The Forgive Files takes us to the January 19 meetings at Flemington and Rosehill.

Forgive Files for January 12

Flemington

Gail: From a wide barrier she had little option but to snag towards the rear of the field in running, before running on strongly with her 58-kilo impost against the boys. Given that the first three across the line were all in the first five in the run, her effort to make significant ground in the straight was impressive. Her record also improves significantly after the first two or three runs of her preparations, so she is one to follow in the upcoming weeks.

Another Prelate: After getting across to the fence from a wide barrier, he tracked up on the inside entering the home straight and was making his run alongside the eventual winner Lord Of Brazil. However, he was squeezed out of a run at around the 200-metre mark and had to stop and shift wider, before hitting the line strongly in the final 100 metres. He may not have beaten the eventual winner, but clearer running may well have seen him run a place.

Melting Moment: She was travelling sweetly near the rails when turning for home and then shifted a couple of horses out, only to find no clear running room. She weaved back and forward looking for a run throughout the straight and jogged to the line under a stranglehold. To make matters worse, had McEvoy stayed on the fence, she’d have gotten the run which eventually presented itself for the winner Danish Whiskey. With only two career starts to date, she is one to follow.

Rosehill

General Peekay: His five runs to date had all been the anti-clockwise Victorian way of going, and involved him racing on or near the speed. However in his first clockwise run, he wasn’t as strongly away and got back in the field, before being involved in a bumping duel at the turn and taking a long time to get into clear running and find his stride. While he ran home no better than fairly, I think he can be forgiven this blemish, especially if he returns to both Victoria and his normal on-pace style.
