ANZ Championships – Grand Final Tip

Filed in Other by on July 19, 2012

After a thrilling overtime victory in the Preliminary Final (not least because it enabled them to cover the 1.5 goal spread), the Waikato/ BOP Magic find themselves representing the Kiwis in the Grand Final and trying to go one better than they did in 2010 when runner-up to the Thunderbirds. Standing in their way are the Melbourne Vixens, seeking a second ANZ Championship title to go with their 2009 success. This one is for all of the marbles, so naturally we’ve handed over the reins to Three Feet Radio’s own Ben Carbonaro for his assessment of the premiership decider.

Our 2011 introductory discussion of how netball line betting works and what to expect from this column

For the purposes of this weekly column, we will only recommend a bet where Ben’s opinion differs from that of bookmakers by at least 3.5 goals.

Grand Final Tip (please note: all times are the local time for the home side)

Sunday July 22, 2:30 PM Melbourne Vixens v Northern Mystics

Bookmakers’ line:  Vixens -4.5

Ben says:  It's come down to this, the biggest game of the 2012 ANZ Championship Grand Final featuring two teams that had indifferent starts to this year. The Vixens had several one goal wins before they dropped three games between rounds seven and nine before going on to win every game since and the Magic have noticed up 11 consecutive wins after losing the first four games. While the Magic have been in superb form stretching back to round five, I think the passionate Melbourne crowd and the strong defensive end led by English international Geva Mentor will get them over the Vixens over the line.  Vixens by 3

Recommended bet:  Nil

And with that, we’re going to put the cue in the rack with a very tidy 8.1 unit profit from only a 30.5 unit outlay. Congratulations to Ben for such high quality tipping – my wallet is certainly the better for it.

Hopefully existing netball fans made a few dollars on the back of these tips, while more regular gamblers picked up some extra cash and hopefully a bit more interest in the sport. Mutually beneficial outcomes are always the best.
